South Australia public holidays 2026: what rostering managers get wrong

South Australia’s holiday calendar is not a copy of NSW or Victoria. If you roster cafés, venues, retail, or NDIS support in Adelaide, three local quirks cause most of the payroll mistakes we see: Adelaide Cup Day, Proclamation Day (not “Boxing Day”), and the 7pm–midnight part-day holidays on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Always confirm the official list with SafeWork SA and the Fair Work Ombudsman 2026 public holidays page before you lock December. Awards and enterprise agreements still decide what you pay on those days.

Adelaide Cup Day (Monday 9 March 2026)

This is a genuine statewide public holiday, not a “city of Adelaide only” day. If your award pays public-holiday rates for work on a public holiday, Cup Day counts. Managers who copy a national calendar from a payroll package often leave it as a normal Monday — and underpay everyone who worked.

Cup weekend also overlaps festival season (see our Mad March rostering guide). Publish that week early, and mark the holiday in your location date overrides so penalty multipliers apply automatically.

Proclamation Day is not Boxing Day

In SA the 26 December holiday is the Proclamation Day holiday. In 2026 it falls on a Saturday, so there is an additional public holiday on Monday 28 December.

The trap: assuming “we already paid Saturday so Monday is ordinary.” For many awards, both days can attract public-holiday treatment if staff work them. Check your award’s weekend + public-holiday interaction — do not stack rates unless the instrument says so.

The 7pm part-day holidays

From 7:00pm to midnight on 24 December and 31 December, SA treats those hours as a public holiday. Hours before 7pm on those dates are ordinary (unless another rule applies, e.g. a Saturday).

Practical rostering:

  1. Split the shift at 19:00 if someone works across the cutoff (e.g. 16:00–23:00).
  2. Apply the public-holiday multiplier only to the evening portion.
  3. Brief floor managers: a “NYE closer” is two pay rates in one shift.

Spreadsheet timesheets miss this constantly. If your rostering tool supports hourly penalty bands and date overrides, set Christmas Eve and NYE as part-day holidays once, then reuse them every year.

A 30-minute setup that prevents December chaos

  • Enter every 2026 SA holiday (including part-days) in Settings → date overrides before November.
  • Publish Christmas and NYE weeks at least two weeks out.
  • Ask staff to lodge unavailability before you auto-schedule.
  • Export approved timesheets to your payroll system — ShiftRova is a payroll feeder, not an ATO STP reporter. Xero, MYOB, or Employment Hero lodges STP.

Fair Work pay guides remain the source of truth for dollar rates. Use this article as a rostering checklist, not legal advice.
